Request – Derek Hale “Free”

You couldn’t leave. You knew you had to, sooner or later, but with everything going on, with the way everything had gone, you hadn’t been able to leave this dreadful place. You stayed in the room where you had been when everything had happened. The room where the window and the door had been blocked, the room where there hadn’t been a way out, the room that had become hotter and hotter, until… until everything had been over. You had been hiding ever since, not showing anyone you were still here. Not that a lot of people could see you, but still. Until that time you hadn’t been paying attention. You had been thinking about a lot of things, and before you knew what had happened, the door had opened, and a familiar figure was standing in the doorway. Derek. He hadn’t been there when it happened, he probably barely knew you, because you hadn’t met yet when you had arrived. “What are you doing here?” He was angry, maybe a bit afraid, but mostly angry, seeing a stranger in his house. You did a step forward but he seemed to see that as a hostile move, because he was attacking you before you knew what happened. Not that it was of much use to him of course, because he flew right through you, finding himself at the other side of the room. He looked surprised, completely aware that he hadn’t missed you, but that he had really walked through you. “What are you?” “We were supposed to meet the night this house burned down… I’m your cousin.” He eyed you, still suspiciously, still not knowing what to think about you. “But if you have been here back then… how…” “How can I still be here? Because I’m actually not. I’m dead, Derek…” “But you’re still here…” You saw how he was looking around him, like he expected to see others showing up. Cousins, uncle… maybe his mother… “There is no one else, Derek. They’re all gone. I wasn’t a werewolf… your mother invited me over because she thought I might have a spark, a special power, and she wanted to see what was true about that. I guess that’s the reason I can still be here.” You saw his expression, where hope had flared up for one moment, turn back to his usual sombre self. “Are you sure?” You nodded, knowing for sure that in all those years you hadn’t been able to leave, you had never seen anyone else. Besides Derek of course. “They are gone Derek. I should go too, but I don’t know if I’m able to leave this behind.” He leaned against the wall, looking at you. “But why? I mean, I grew up here, it has been my home since I can remember anything, but you?” You shrugged. “I don’t know… I guess there was just so much injustice here that I’m not able to leave that behind me.” “Me neither…” was all he said as an answer, and he started to walk in the direction of the door again. “Derek…” you said when he had almost left the room. He turned around, looking at you again, accusingly, as if you shouldn’t be here. “I know you had rather seen someone else than me, but believe me… it’s better for them not to be stuck here. They are free.” One moment he was silent. “I know… believe me, I know…”
